Why "The Other Normal"?

The basic idea has been for a long time not to follow the normal "Normal" with commonly accepted goals: Working 40, 50 or 60 hours a week in a profession once learned, inside in an office with the need to have the kids in the daycare in the meantime, to be able to make enough money to afford a commonly big house (loan) to live in in the free (dark & short) evenings waiting for the "Thank god it's friday", the weekend to come or even retirement to start to be able to live the life we actually really want, which most at that point then regret because they have died before, are sick or they just keep themselves still too busy with (for them) irrelevant things as before.

So what's the idea?

At the very basis is the concept of living a life in a handleable speed and direction that we want and can control. The real game changer came with the move to Finland in 2020 where we found an old loghouse that was affordable without a loan and that we could renovate almost entirely by ourselves. After spending months of manpower for the renovation we were able to create a home for our future life here. And because of our high workforce/time investment, the money investment was limited and that offers a big freedom for us in all our choices today. We can now decide

  • not to work both parents 40 hours a week
  • not to have kids in daycare all day long (and they not seeing their parents for the most part of the day)
  • And that is already so much more freedom than most of Western families do have.

To document this big change of moving from Austria to Finland, renovating the house here on our own and to inspire people with other topics our private lifestyle blog www.theothernormal.life was created with the name actually designed to fit that website. It was then just an easy step to use the same name for my new company in Finland.
